Charging at home suits most electric car owners, but it puts a steady, high load on your wiring for hours at a time, often overnight. We install domestic and commercial charge points across Sussex and the South East, and every job starts with the part nobody sees, which is whether the existing supply can carry it.

That means checking the rating of your main fuse, what the property already draws, how the installation is earthed and whether there is a spare way in the fuse board. Plenty of homes take a charger without any change to the supply. Where the capacity is tighter, load management can be built in so the charger eases off when the shower or the oven is running.

The second half of the job is practical. Where do you park, which side of the car is the socket on, how far will the cable reach and where can it run without crossing a path people walk on. What a Charger Installation Involves

Checking the supply before anything is fitted

A charge point draws a steady current for hours, so the first job is a survey of what you already have: the rating of the cut-out fuse, the size of the tails, the earthing arrangement, the condition of the main bonding and whether the consumer unit has a spare way. Any of these can change what is possible.

Older properties sometimes need the main earthing conductor or the bonding to water and gas brought up to standard first. If the existing load leaves little headroom, a current sensor on the incoming tails lets the charger reduce its output when the rest of the house is busy, rather than tripping the main fuse.

Where the unit goes and how the cable gets there

Position matters more than people expect. We look at where you park, which side of the car the socket sits on, whether you reverse in or drive in, and how much slack the cable needs so it is not stretched taut across the bonnet. The lead should never have to cross a public footpath.

Cable runs are kept tidy and out of the way, clipped inside the loft or under the floor where possible, and in armoured cable where the route goes outside or underground to a garage or a parking space away from the house. Where there is no suitable wall, the unit can go on a post.

What happens on installation day

The charger goes on its own circuit from the fuse board, with the protective device the regulations call for on an EV circuit, including detection of DC fault current. Protection against an open PEN conductor is either built into the unit or provided by an earth electrode, depending on how the property is supplied.

A straightforward install is usually a day’s work. A long cable run, a trench to a detached garage or an earthing upgrade will add to it, and we tell you that at the quote rather than on the day. The circuit is tested, the paperwork issued and the unit set up and demonstrated before we leave.

Charging for businesses, landlords and fleets

Commercial work runs from a single unit for a company car to a bank of bays in a staff or customer car park. Where several chargers share one supply, load management spreads the available current between them so the incoming capacity is not exceeded. Three-phase supplies allow faster units where the vehicles need them.

Bollard mounting, bay marking, lighting and cable containment are all part of the design on larger sites, along with an application to the distribution network operator where the supply needs increasing. For landlords and managing agents we can look at how shared parking works and how each bay is metered.

What Governs the Wait, and How a Fault Spreads

The honest answer is that it depends, and it is fairer to tell you what it depends on. Where the property sits in Sussex or the wider South East matters, as does the time of day, whether anyone can be there to let an engineer in, and how dangerous the symptoms you describe sound. You are told plainly where things stand when you call, rather than handed a figure that might not hold.

The phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year, nights, weekends and bank holidays included, and the call itself does real work. Describing what you can see, hear and smell lets us sort a genuine hazard from work that is better booked in. A burning smell, scorching, sparking, a shock felt from a tap, or water that has reached wiring is treated ahead of a single dead socket.

Some faults are not ours to fix, and saying so on the phone saves a wasted visit. If the whole street is dark, the fault sits on the supply side and belongs to the distribution network operator, reported free on 105. Where it is yours, turn the installation off at the main switch if it is safe to reach, leave anything scorched or wet alone, and stop resetting a breaker that will not hold.

None of that is caution for its own sake. A loose or high resistance connection gives off heat whenever the circuit is loaded, and that heat carbonises the terminal and the insulation around it, which raises the resistance further, which makes more heat again. An MCB does not see it, because it protects the cable against overload and short circuit rather than the quality of a termination. What starts at one accessory can end as cable to replace and a wall to make good.

A shock works differently. Insulation that has failed can put metalwork at a voltage it should not be at, and a circuit protective conductor that is no longer continuous is what leaves it there, because fault current has no path back to operate the protective device. Completing that path takes a person, which is why what seems harmless in a dry room is another matter in your bathroom or outdoors. Equipment suffers too, since a lost neutral can leave appliances seeing an abnormal voltage.

In an emergency we ask what has stopped working and whether anything is hot, sparking or smelling of burning, and tell you what to switch off until we arrive.     Arrival & Making Safe

    A Part P registered and fully insured engineer attends and makes the installation safe before anything else. Where there is a risk, the affected circuit or your fuse board is isolated, and anything that cannot be put right straight away is left in a safe condition. Planned work follows the same rule: circuits are proved dead before they are worked on.

    Diagnosis by Testing, Not Guesswork

    We work from readings rather than assumptions. Testing can include continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD testing. The results show where a fault sits, what an installation can safely take, and whether a problem is inside your property or on the incoming supply, which belongs to the distribution network operator and is reported free on 105.

    Your Options & the Cost

    Before any repair or installation begins, we explain the options: what needs doing now, what can safely wait, and whether repair or replacement is the sensible choice. Quotes are free and carry no obligation, and nothing goes ahead until you agree the price, so there are no call-out surprises. If parts or a return visit are needed, we tell you then.

    Carrying Out the Work

    The same qualified engineers who took your call carry out the work, whether that is an overnight repair, a fuse board replacement, new lighting, smoke and heat alarms, a rewire, an inspection, solar panels or an EV charging point. It is done to the current wiring regulations, with cables and accessories fixed securely and neatly, and disruption kept to a minimum.

    Final Testing & Certification

    Before we leave, the work is tested and checked in operation, and the working area is left tidy. You are told plainly what was done and anything worth keeping an eye on. Certification is supplied where the work calls for it, so you hold a written record of what was carried out and the results of the testing.

How do I know if my supply can take a charger?

It comes down to the rating of your main fuse, what the property already draws at peak and how the installation is earthed. We check all three on the survey. If the headroom is limited, a load management sensor lets the charger throttle back instead of the supply being upgraded.

Do I need off-street parking to have one fitted?

Yes, in practice. The charging lead has to reach the car without crossing a pavement or a shared access route, so a drive, a garage or an allocated bay is needed. If you park on the street, a home unit is not usually an option and public charging is the alternative.

Can I just charge from an ordinary socket in the garage?

It is slow, and a standard socket and its circuit were never intended to carry that current for hours at a time night after night. Sockets, connections and cables can overheat. A dedicated charge point on its own protected circuit is designed for the duty and is the safer choice.

Should I choose a tethered unit or one with a socket?

A tethered unit has the lead permanently attached, which is quicker day to day but fixes you to one connector type and one cable length. A socketed unit takes your own lead, keeps the wall tidier and suits households with more than one vehicle. We will talk both through on the survey.
