Houses and bungalows

Bungalows, Estates And The Wiring Behind Them

Polegate is a commuter town rather than an old market centre, and much of its housing is twentieth century: bungalows, post war estates and later infill. That shapes the work we are called to. On a single storey home the wiring runs through the loft, cables end up buried under insulation laid over them long afterwards, and circuits meant for a far lighter load now feed a kitchen full of appliances.

Homes of that age are rarely still wired as they were built. A garage becomes a room, a conservatory goes on the back, a charge point appears on the drive, and a shed or garden office ends up fed by a cable that was only ever meant to run a light. Additions like those are where faults often begin, so we test the circuit feeding them and check earthing and bonding before anything is disturbed.

Where the fuse board has never been changed, you may still find rewireable fuses, no RCD protection and bonding that met the rules of the day rather than the current ones. In houses of this sort the board often sits in a hall cupboard or a garage, out of sight for years. We test before quoting, say what is worn out and what is old but sound, and stage the work if a full rewire is not wanted yet.

What we do

Electrical Services in Polegate

Out of hours

From The First Call To The Certificate

An emergency call starts with questions. We will ask what tripped, what was running at the time and whether the neighbours lost power too, because a fault inside your installation is a different job from a supply failure the network operator has to put right. Storms coming in off the coast bring a run of the second sort, and when that is what you have, we will say so and tell you who needs to put it right.

Around Polegate the work runs across domestic, commercial and industrial premises. Householders ring about a dead ring final or lighting that has gone across a whole floor, letting agents book landlord safety certificates, known as EICRs, and alarm work together so a tenancy can change over cleanly, and commercial callers want the fault isolated with the rest of the premises kept running where that is safe. A written note of what still needs doing goes with it.

CK Electrical is family run and locally based, covering Sussex and the South East. Quotes are free, and the price is explained before work begins. Emergency work carries a call out fee and then an hourly rate, both set out beforehand. The firm is Part P registered and fully insured, work meets the current wiring regulations, certification is supplied for notifiable work, and the phone is answered twenty four hours a day, every day of the year.

Our process

How We Work, from First Visit to Final Certificate

  1. 01

    Your Call, Day or Night

You can call us at any hour, every day of the year, including bank holidays. In an emergency we ask what has stopped working and whether anything is hot, sparking or smelling of burning, and tell you what to switch off until we arrive. Booked work, from a landlord certificate to solar panels or EV charging, starts on the same call.

  2. 02

    Arrival & Making Safe

A Part P registered and fully insured engineer attends and makes the installation safe before anything else. Where there is a risk, the affected circuit or your fuse board is isolated, and anything that cannot be put right straight away is left in a safe condition. Planned work follows the same rule: circuits are proved dead before they are worked on.

  3. 03

    Diagnosis by Testing, Not Guesswork

We work from readings rather than assumptions. Testing can include continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD testing. The results show where a fault sits, what an installation can safely take, and whether a problem is inside your property or on the incoming supply, which belongs to the distribution network operator and is reported free on 105.

  4. 04

    Your Options & the Cost

Before any repair or installation begins, we explain the options: what needs doing now, what can safely wait, and whether repair or replacement is the sensible choice. Quotes are free and carry no obligation, and nothing goes ahead until you agree the price, so there are no call-out surprises. If parts or a return visit are needed, we tell you then.

  5. 05

    Carrying Out the Work

The same qualified engineers who took your call carry out the work, whether that is an overnight repair, a fuse board replacement, new lighting, smoke and heat alarms, a rewire, an inspection, solar panels or an EV charging point. It is done to the current wiring regulations, with cables and accessories fixed securely and neatly, and disruption kept to a minimum.

  6. 06

    Final Testing & Certification

Before we leave, the work is tested and checked in operation, and the working area is left tidy. You are told plainly what was done and anything worth keeping an eye on. Certification is supplied where the work calls for it, so you hold a written record of what was carried out and the results of the testing.
