Coastal conditions

Salt Air, Mixed Housing and Circuits That Trip

Littlehampton is a seaside town, and its housing covers the full range of ages, from older terraces and flats near the seafront to post-war semis and later estates further out. That mix means no two fault calls look the same. When a circuit goes dead or the fuse board keeps tripping, we test rather than guess: divide the installation down, work back to the section at fault, and explain what we find.

Coastal air is hard on anything fitted outside. Salt works into external sockets, garden lighting, outbuilding supplies and the fittings on an exposed wall, and corrosion at a terminal shows up as a nuisance trip or a circuit that behaves in dry weather and fails in wet. Where equipment is exposed we check the enclosure rating and the glands as well as the connections, because replacing like for like often repeats the fault.

Older installations also take on work they were never sized for. An EV charger, a solar array, a shower upgrade and a supply to a garden room can all land on the same tails over a few years. Before any of that goes ahead we check the earthing arrangement, the main bonding and what the incoming supply will carry, and on an exposed coastal plot the choice of outdoor equipment matters as much as the cable.

How jobs run

Who Calls Us in Littlehampton, and How a Job Runs

Calls come from a mix of people. Householders who have lost sockets on one floor, landlords who need an EICR before a tenancy begins, agents holding a report with a C2 on it, and seafront and holiday premises where a trip has taken out a till, a fridge or a chiller at the worst point of the season. Domestic, commercial and industrial work all get the same approach.

A job runs the same way whatever the hour. You describe what has happened, we ask enough questions to narrow it down before anyone attends, and the first task on site is making the installation safe. In a house split into flats that can mean working out which supply feeds what. Emergency work carries a call-out fee then an hourly rate, both explained first. Planned work is quoted free of charge, with no obligation.

CK Electrical is a family run firm based in Sussex, covering the town, the coast either side of it and the villages between there and the Downs, along with the wider South East. Work is Part P registered and carried out to the current wiring regulations, with certification supplied for anything notifiable. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year, nights, weekends and bank holidays included.

Our process

How We Work, from First Visit to Final Certificate

  1. 01

    Your Call, Day or Night

You can call us at any hour, every day of the year, including bank holidays. In an emergency we ask what has stopped working and whether anything is hot, sparking or smelling of burning, and tell you what to switch off until we arrive. Booked work, from a landlord certificate to solar panels or EV charging, starts on the same call.

  2. 02

    Arrival & Making Safe

A Part P registered and fully insured engineer attends and makes the installation safe before anything else. Where there is a risk, the affected circuit or your fuse board is isolated, and anything that cannot be put right straight away is left in a safe condition. Planned work follows the same rule: circuits are proved dead before they are worked on.

  3. 03

    Diagnosis by Testing, Not Guesswork

We work from readings rather than assumptions. Testing can include continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD testing. The results show where a fault sits, what an installation can safely take, and whether a problem is inside your property or on the incoming supply, which belongs to the distribution network operator and is reported free on 105.

  4. 04

    Your Options & the Cost

Before any repair or installation begins, we explain the options: what needs doing now, what can safely wait, and whether repair or replacement is the sensible choice. Quotes are free and carry no obligation, and nothing goes ahead until you agree the price, so there are no call-out surprises. If parts or a return visit are needed, we tell you then.

  5. 05

    Carrying Out the Work

The same qualified engineers who took your call carry out the work, whether that is an overnight repair, a fuse board replacement, new lighting, smoke and heat alarms, a rewire, an inspection, solar panels or an EV charging point. It is done to the current wiring regulations, with cables and accessories fixed securely and neatly, and disruption kept to a minimum.

  6. 06

    Final Testing & Certification

Before we leave, the work is tested and checked in operation, and the working area is left tidy. You are told plainly what was done and anything worth keeping an eye on. Certification is supplied where the work calls for it, so you hold a written record of what was carried out and the results of the testing.
