Wiring in Arundel's Older Buildings

Much of the housing in the older streets above the river has been in use for a very long time, and the wiring inside tells the story. Rubber and fabric insulation goes brittle with age, lighting circuits were often run without a protective conductor, and cables have been extended by whoever came before. The first job in a building like that is to find what is actually there rather than what the fuse board suggests.

Faults in these buildings rarely sit where you expect them. Junction boxes end up buried under floorboards or behind plaster, spurs run off spurs, and a circuit that looks straightforward at the consumer unit turns out to feed half the house. We test before we cut, lift boards carefully, and leave the joints we find accessible so the next problem is easier to trace.

A building altered many times over deserves care with the fabric as well as the circuits. Where a floor, a moulding or old lime plaster is worth keeping, we look for a cable route that avoids damage, and in solid walls that often means a surface route or a lifted board rather than a chase. When a rewire is the honest answer rather than another patch repair, you are told that plainly.

What we do

Electrical Services in Arundel

On site

From the First Call to the Test Certificate

The town sits on the Arun below the Downs, a small place ringed by villages and open country, so the work in Arundel ranges from older houses to shop units and property out in the lanes. A tripping RCD, a dead lighting circuit, water reaching a fitting, a fuse board that will not reset: the phone is answered at any hour, on any day, and we talk through what has happened before anyone sets off.

On arrival the first step is to make the installation safe, then find the fault properly rather than guess at it. That might mean an insulation resistance test on a suspect circuit, or isolating a section at a time until the fault shows itself. Emergency work carries a call-out fee and then an hourly rate, both explained before you agree to anything, and you are told what each repair option would cost before it starts.

Not everything is an emergency. Much of the work booked across this part of the Arun valley is planned: a fuse board replaced with RCBO protection, extra sockets and circuits, lighting upgrades, smoke and heat alarms, an EICR for a tenancy, EV charging points, solar panels. Quotes for that work are free and carry no obligation. We are Part P registered and insured, we work to the current wiring regulations, and certification is supplied on completion.

Our process

How We Work, from First Visit to Final Certificate

  1. 01

    Your Call, Day or Night

You can call us at any hour, every day of the year, including bank holidays. In an emergency we ask what has stopped working and whether anything is hot, sparking or smelling of burning, and tell you what to switch off until we arrive. Booked work, from a landlord certificate to solar panels or EV charging, starts on the same call.

  2. 02

    Arrival & Making Safe

A Part P registered and fully insured engineer attends and makes the installation safe before anything else. Where there is a risk, the affected circuit or your fuse board is isolated, and anything that cannot be put right straight away is left in a safe condition. Planned work follows the same rule: circuits are proved dead before they are worked on.

  3. 03

    Diagnosis by Testing, Not Guesswork

We work from readings rather than assumptions. Testing can include continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD testing. The results show where a fault sits, what an installation can safely take, and whether a problem is inside your property or on the incoming supply, which belongs to the distribution network operator and is reported free on 105.

  4. 04

    Your Options & the Cost

Before any repair or installation begins, we explain the options: what needs doing now, what can safely wait, and whether repair or replacement is the sensible choice. Quotes are free and carry no obligation, and nothing goes ahead until you agree the price, so there are no call-out surprises. If parts or a return visit are needed, we tell you then.

  5. 05

    Carrying Out the Work

The same qualified engineers who took your call carry out the work, whether that is an overnight repair, a fuse board replacement, new lighting, smoke and heat alarms, a rewire, an inspection, solar panels or an EV charging point. It is done to the current wiring regulations, with cables and accessories fixed securely and neatly, and disruption kept to a minimum.

  6. 06

    Final Testing & Certification

Before we leave, the work is tested and checked in operation, and the working area is left tidy. You are told plainly what was done and anything worth keeping an eye on. Certification is supplied where the work calls for it, so you hold a written record of what was carried out and the results of the testing.
